Treatment with CBD – Your Gateway to the Science of Cannabidiol

Can I take CBD and caffeine (coffee, tea, caffeinated soda, chocolate, energy drinks, etc.)?

Cannabidiol as we know has shown great potential in treating various conditions ranging from pain to seizures. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and the most consumed psychostimulant worldwide. The question many people are asking is: can I take CBD and caffeine?

Indeed, in recent times, there has been a variety of cannabidiol products. Some examples are CBD gummies, CBD oil and even CBD coffee. The many benefits of both CBD and coffee have made people curious as to how they can incorporate the two in their diet to maximize their potentials. Both have proven to have some health benefits. That said, is it a good enough reason to combine CBD with caffeine?

Caffeine - mechanism of action

Caffeine is found in the seeds, nuts, fruits or leaves of certain plants native to Africa, South America and East Asia. Caffeine is globally consumed in very high levels such as in coffee, tea, mate, chocolate, caffeinated soda and energy drinks. It functions by reversibly blocking the action of adenosine on its receptors. This blockage prevents the drowsiness induced by adenosine. One reason people take caffeine is to improve their alertness, memory and concentration. 

Additionally, caffeine has shown benefits in weight loss, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and in pain management. Increased consumption of caffeine can be bad as it causes insomnia, anxiety, headaches, dehydration, restlessness, tremors and dependency. Combining CBD and caffeine might seem to maximize the benefits of both drugs, but what do studies say?

CBD and Caffeine interactions

Just like CBD, caffeine is also a drug and combining both of them is bound to create drug-dug interaction. Caffeine is metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 oxidase enzyme system specifically the CYP1A2 isozyme. CBD on the other hand acts as an inhibitor of this CYP1A2 isozyme. 

When CBD inhibits CYP1A2 , caffeine will not be metabolized and its concentration in the blood will increase. As a result, caffeine effects will increase and at the same time increase caffeine side effects. Therefore, taking both drugs together will improve memory, alertness and potentially help with weight loss but can also intensify certain side effects of caffeine.

Synergic effect of taking CBD and caffeine

From research we know that CBD inhibits the isozyme that metabolizes caffeine causing increased side effects of caffeine. Irrespective of this, studies on the benefits of CBD shows that CBD reduces cerebral blood flow to the limbic system of the brain thereby reducing the limbic area activities. This modulation of the brain activity induced by CBD reduces anxiety in healthy patients and people with social anxiety.

This means that when a person takes cannabidiol with caffeine products such as coffee, tea or caffeinated drinks, CBD will counteract the anxiety caused by caffeine. Taking CBD and caffeine might therefore reduce the anxiety caffeine causes in some people.


The effects of taking CBD and caffeine is dose dependent. If you are a person who consumes caffeinated products regularly and are wondering if you can take CBD with these caffeinated products, consulting your physician to help with dosage control is the best option.
